GOSPELGRAM
What’s respect got to do with it?
Many years ago, a popular song by Tina Turner titled What’s Love Got To Do With It? was on the lips of everyone. Over and over the question is asked. Even though at the beginning of the song it is established that the attraction of opposites that is felt by boy and girl should not be misunderstood as love.
Even when the heroine of the song acts confused and dazed when the boy is around, the word that would explain what is being experienced is not
enough because her heart is being broken. So, the refrain continues. What’s love got to do with it? And the next line asks, What’s love but a second-hand emotion?
The same could be said for What’s respect got to do with it? The actions in Uvalde, Texas, by law enforcement agents, weeks after children and teachers were murdered lack respect for the residents of that town. Even though some actions are slowly moving toward explanations, respect has been elusive. Don’t let what you see allow you to think justice is being served.
Respect is being offered to those in power living their lives every but not to the families that have suffered loss of life. Respect would go a
long way in healing wounds if there was regard for their feelings, wishes - the very humanity of those who experienced the tragedy of that day.
